Still frame of Joel Parker and Dr. Sara Helms Cahan, from Episode 3 of 'Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman'

Dr. Joel Parker’s research shows that, unlike regular ant colonies where queens and workers are the result of matings between females and males, the queens of southwestern ants need to mate with one kind of male to produce future queens and another kind of male to produce workers.

Academic Areas of Focus

Arts and Humanities

Students in Arts & Humanities programs are actively involved in their educational experience with opportunities for hands-on learning in and out of the classroom. Our faculty has an open-door policy, encouraging students to discuss their academics and other interests. With strong alumni connections, students have access to internships, career advice and jobs.

Internationally accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, Plattsburgh’s School of Business and Economics offers students a broad-based education with a global perspective and emphasis on experiential learning. Our programs are led by distinguished faculty, many of whom are leading researchers in their field.

Plattsburgh’s nationally accredited Education program offers Bachelor's and master's degrees in nearly 20 programs. All of our students begin fieldwork in either their freshman or sophomore year - offering best practice immersion early in your degree.

Health & Human Services

At Plattsburgh, we believe it’s essential for students in our Health & Human Services programs to obtain the experience necessary to prepare for a working career in their area of interest. We focus on an ethical approach to human well-being and encourage critical thinking, as well as practical application.

Math and Science

Plattsburgh’s Mathematics and Science programs prepare students for their futures. Our classes are taught by faculty who are actively engaged in their fields and who encourage students to delve into real-world learning. The result? Plattsburgh provides students with an opportunity to learn from those who are leading the way.

Social Sciences

Plattsburgh’s approach to the social sciences is experience-based. Taught by leading faculty who are actively engaged in research, each program encourages students to gain experience outside the classroom through student/faculty research, teaching or fieldwork.
