Professional Development Opportunities

SUNY Plattsburgh continues to engage and create professional development opportunities for all academic, professional, and support-staff employees. Here is a brief synopsis of current programs, with application deadlines. 

2018–2019 Professional Development Opportunities

SUNY Plattsburgh Programs

Center for the Study of Canada and Institute on Québec Studies

The Center and Institute provide limited funding for the development of new Canadian-content undergraduate courses, and to facilitate participation in Canadian or Québec Studies conferences. Applications for scholarly travel support are accepted on a continuing basis. A complete listing of policies, procedures and application forms can be accessed at the Center/Institute. Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE)

The Center for Teaching Excellence offers a variety of services designed to assist faculty as effectively as possible in their development as teachers. College Auxiliary Services (CAS)

College Auxiliary Services manages funding that is awarded for various initiatives throughout the academic year. The program, activity or event should promote educational growth, development, and advancement; foster a sense of community; be open to all members of the campus community; and be held on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. Individual Departments

All departments, centers and programs have limited monies available to partially support faculty travel for presentations and attendance at profession­al conferences. Please contact your dean or department chair for more information.

In-House Grant Programs

In-house mini-grants are periodically available to provide “seed” money to initi­ate a new project or continue a current, externally sponsored project. In-house program development grants support activities that seek to enhance the college’s visibility through special programmatic activities. The size of both grant programs is generally modest. In-house mini-grants and program development grants must be linked to either a new or continuing project submitted to an external sponsor. The projects may focus on research, education, and/or public-service activities.

Technology Enhanced Learning support for Faculty

The LITS Technology Enhanced Learning Unit in Feinberg Library supports faculty in the vital and fast-evolving area of learning technologies, delivering high-value technology enhancements to the teaching and learning environment at SUNY Plattsburgh. Services include workshops and individual consultation in instructional design and pedagogy, instructional technologies, Moodle, Mahara E-portfolio, and multimedia production, software training, and administration of Teaching and Technology Software and Tools Grants. Presidential Research Award

This award program supports full-time faculty who wish to design projects and programs to develop and conduct research-based activities that will enhance their growth as scholars and enhance SUNY Plattsburgh’s research environment. Support includes interdisciplinary/collaborative research programs and single-focused research programs. Requests may not exceed $5,000. Rabin Fellowship in Jewish Studies

This program provides support for new course development that broadens understanding of Jewish life and culture. Course must concentrate on subjects central to the Jewish experience. Proposals will be considered from any discipline. For additional information regarding the application process and timeline, contact Dr. Jonathan Slater, director (email: [email protected]).

Ethics Institute Fellowships in Residence

This program is a competitive fellowship to study and incorporate ethical issues into the curriculum. It provides course release time for one semester. For additional information regarding the application process and timeline, contact Dr. Jonathan Slater, director (email: [email protected]).

Sabbatical Leaves

Sabbatical leaves may be granted for planned travel, study, formal education, research, writing or other experiences of professional value, in accordance with the Policies of the Board of Trustees (Article XIII) and the Agreement between the State of New York and United University Professions (Article 23.6). For the next review cycle for sabbatical leaves (2018–2019), half-year at full-pay awards and full-year at half-pay awards will be available. New York State and United University Professions Programs

The grant programs below are offered by United University Professions, and are funded through the 2011–2016 UUP contract. Future awards are dependent upon UUP contract.

Professional Development Individual Award Program (PDIAP)

The New York State/United University Professions Joint Labor-Management Committees’ Individual Development Awards Program is intended to assist eligible full-time employees in the Professional Services Negotiating Unit (08) in the development of their full professional potential in preparing for advancement. Up to a maximum of $400 per award (average award is $350) has been available in the past. Program guidelines are available at nysuup.lmc.ny.gov/development/individual.html.

Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Affirmative Action/Diversity Leave Program

This program is intended to enhance employment opportunities for people in the Professional Services Negotiating Unit (08), who are preparing for permanent or continuing appointments with preference given to minorities, women, employees with disabilities, or an employee with military status. This program provides a fully paid leave for at least one semester. Applicants must commit to returning to campus after the leave for a minimum of one year. Online Self-Study and Instructor Lead Courses

A series of courses is available, at no cost, to employees in the Professional Services Negotiating Unit (08), who would like to further their professional development. A summary of these self-study and instructor lead courses may be accessed at https://nysuup.lmc.ny.gov/development/index.html

  • In-House Mini-Grants, including In-House Program Development Awards — *Quarterly deadlines, as follows: September 12, 2018; November 14, 2018; February 13, 2019; April 10, 2019; June 12, 2019.
  • Presidential Research Award* — March 28, 2019.
  • Dr. Nuala McGann Drescher Leave Program* — Future awards are dependent upon the UUP contractual bargaining agreement.
  • Ethics Institute Program for Spring 2019 — submit application by August 24, 2019.
  • Professional Development Individual Awards Program (PDIAP)* — Future awards are dependent upon the UUP contractual bargaining agreement.
